Boston Chapter Background

The Boston Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators was chartered in 1974 and today has more than 200 members throughout Massachusetts. Our membership is comprised of large and small private law firms as well as Corporate and Governmental legal departments.

The goal of the Association is to provide personal and professional growth and educational and networking opportunities to Administrators and Legal Managers with varied legal backgrounds. Additionally, we inform the legal profession regarding the advantages and availability of Professional Administrators.

Membership includes a variety of programs, publications and networking activities:

  • Monthly meetings are an opportunity to network with other members and guests who represent a variety of different sized law firms and management functions. Many members find networking the greatest asset.

  • Educational programs are developed by a committee of peers who sponsor speakers at each of the luncheons or afternoon sessions with the goal of enhancing management skills and on occasion, just having fun. Volunteers in specific management areas sponsor "brown bag" lunches at their firms to discuss specific topics of interest in a more informal setting, (e.g. human resources, technology, facilities, retirement programs, small firms, etc.).

  • The National ALA organization sponsors an educational conference each year, and the Boston Chapter offers scholarships to help defray the costs for members who would otherwise be unable to attend.

  • We publish a membership directory which lists all Boston Chapter members, their firms, firm size and contact information. This directory is included in your annual dues and allows members to network with each other

  • Access to the members only portion of the website. This gives members access to entire membership list, access to board minutes and officials ALA documents, and access to the Members Only Message Board. This allows members to post questions or concerns to other members for help in solving firm issues.

  • We sponsor annual salary surveys and benefit reviews and participant law firms receive the results at minimal cost.

  • We encourage you to explore the many opportunities available to you by joining the Boston Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators. The educational and networking experiences will definitely increase and enhance your capability and professional standing and improve the quality of management in your firm.

If you would like information on membership, please contact our Membership Chair Susan Sawyer (617) 557-9696 or Chapter President Marybeth Flynn at (617) 856-8200
