CLM Study Group Update

ALA members recall November 17th as the day of the successful One Day Educational Conference.  For a few, the date also marks the beginning of a journey in career development.  On that day, eight Boston ALA members registered for the Chapter's first CLM study group and began a five month quest to expand their overall knowledge of legal management.  Over the pursuing weeks and months, the group's progress would include exchanging ideas and view points pertaining to law firm operations, legal industry topics, human resources and financial management.  Presentations by experienced professionals in each of these fields encouraged questions from the group with the answers frequently leading to matters vital to the respective firm of each individual group member.

HIPAA, BOMA and SWOT are acronyms perhaps not frequently verbalized by legal administrators but are included within the diverse list of topics that rule our professional lives.  Study group members do not represent themselves as experts in these topics, but they should be seen as individuals who have invested their time and effort to broaden and develop their overall understanding of these and other matters.

In the Spring, many young men and women will be graduating from college.  As you congratulate them, take a moment to reflect on what you are recognizing; is it their diploma or is it the effort they have shown during their matriculation?  Similarly, for some members of the study group, their journey will end, while others will continue on into the Fall and later months.  Some members will seek certification in legal management, while others will take comfort in the knowledge of what they have learned.

Regardless of the paths taken, all members of the group should be commended for their dedication and team work.  Though their journeys are not yet complete please take a moment to congratulate Boston's CLM study group members and wish them success.
