Community Relations Update

The Community Relations Committee broadened their outreach in 2007 in many ways. In March, we held our very first food sorting night at the Boston Food Bank with 32 members, families and vendors helping. The feedback from those attending was, "This was great! I didn't know we could sort so much food at once. We need to do this again!" In May, we ran the Putting Contest at the Vendor Golf Tournament and despite the rainy weather raised $1,200 for the Finex House.

The Community Challenge Day on October 13th, had many members, friends and vendors painting 22 bedrooms at the Harrington House and Knight's Children's Center which are both affiliated with The Home for Little Wanderers. The painting also led to the purchase of new comforters and sheets for all of the newly painted bedrooms. At the same time, we ran a financial campaign for the Home and with many generous donations from ALA members, firms and vendors raised $23,600. The Committee organized and held the Silent Auction at the One Day Chapter Conference and from the auction proceeds raised $14,000 to benefit The Finex House, which is a home for battered women and their children. For the holiday season, ALA sponsored a toy drive for the Italian Home for Children. Due to the many wonderful donations from members and vendor sponsors, bags of toys for all 56 children on the list were filled. The past year was very exciting and we look forward to continuing our community outreach programs in more and different ways. Please join us on the night of February 13th for a night of food sorting at The Boston Food Bank.
