The Boston Chapter is excited to announce the June Quarterly Event!

Speaker: Matthew Slater
Captain of the Patriots, 3 Time Super Bowl Champion & Ten Time Pro Bowler

Matthew Slater was born on September 9, 1985 in Orange, California.  Matthew’s father, Jackie Slater, is a former NFL Hall of Fame offensive tackle.  After a high school career where he excelled in both track and football, Slater attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he majored in political science and history.  At UCLA, Matthew shined on special teams, setting the school record for touchdown returns and total return yards in a single season.

The New England Patriots selected Slater in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft, and he has been with the team ever since in a stellar career.  In 2011, he was chosen as a Special Teams Captain by his teammates for his impact on and off the field, an honor he has held every year since.  Slater has won 11 AFC East titles and five AFC Championships in his Patriots career.  He is a 3x Super Bowl Champion, has been selected to ten Pro Bowls (the most ever by a special teams player) and has been named to the All-Pro First-Team five times.  He is widely considered one of the greatest NFL special teams players over the last decade, and was named by the Patriots as the top special teams player in their All-Decade team of the 2010s.  Slater has played in 24 postseason games in his career, tied for the 10th-most among all players in NFL history.

Matthew is also consistently recognized for the work he does off the field.  In 2013, Slater was awarded the New England Patriots 11th Ron Burton Community Service Award by owner Robert Kraft for his commitment to community service and leadership.  In 2017, he was awarded the Bart Starr Award, given annually to a player who exemplifies character and leadership on and off the field.  Slater’s father, Jackie, received the same award in 1996, and they are the only father-son pair to have both received this prestigious award.  Slater is a two-time recipient of the Ed Block Award, an award given to those who best exemplify the principles of courage and sportsmanship.  He has been nominated by his teammates for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award every year since 2017, an honor that recognizes the best teammates across the NFL. In 2022, Matthew won  the sportsmanship award, and has the honor to donate $25,000 to the charity of his choice.  Slater is a devoted family man who enjoys spending time with his wife and their four children.
