Who We Are

The Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) is an international organization of more than 9,000 members throughout the United States, Canada and 20 other countries. Founded in 1974, the Boston Chapter has approximately 200 members comprised of Administrators and Legal Managers from firms of all sizes in the private, corporate and government sectors.

The Boston Chapter ALA is committed to providing members with unique educational and networking opportunities to help them enhance their skills both personally and professionally. The Chapter is also committed to making a difference in our community by fundraising and volunteering time at several local charities, most recently including The Boys & Girls Clubs of
Medford & Somerville.

Membership Dues

The Boston Chapter has structured our dues in recognition that Member benefits vary based on the type of membership, when a Member joins the Chapter, and where his/her firm is located. Membership in the Boston Chapter runs from January 1 to December 31.  

Firm location:  Since many Chapter activities take place in Boston, we recognize that those outside the Boston area may not be able to participate as often. The membership rates for Members outside of Boston are therefore lower.  

Rates for membership in the ALA Boston Chapter are as follows:

Student Membership

(Term based on the calendar year - January 1 through December 31)

                                                                                           Part-time or Full-time Students in any degree program at an accredited institution of higher learning are eligible for ALA Student Membership.
(Transcript required at time of application and annually at renewal. Maximum of four student membership terms allowed. Ineligible for student rate if employed in full-time, exempt position.) 


Memberships that begin in January through September will expire December 31 of the year applied. Memberships that begin in October will not expire until December 31 of the following year.

Boston Chapter ALA Membership is not issued to organizations and is not transferable from one individual to another. Membership dues are non-refundable.

Eligibility Criteria 

Regular Membership is available to any Member of the International ALA who is a:
  • Full-time legal administrator or support manager employed in a private law firm, legal service clinic, corporate legal department, university legal department, governmental legal agency, court system, charitable legal agency or other organization engaged primarily in the practice of law.
  • Practicing lawyer with principal management responsibility in his/her legal organization.

Associate Membership is designed for individuals who are interested in legal administration and management but do not qualify for Regular Membership. Individuals may apply for Associate Membership if they are Associate Members of the International ALA and are:

  • Practicing lawyers with an interest in law firm administration and management;
  • Individuals engaged in an ongoing employment-type relationship which involves providing continuing management services of the types defined in the bylaws;
  • Retired Regular Members of ALA who are not otherwise employed;
  • Unemployed legal administrators who have exhausted their eligibility for Regular Membership, who are not serving as consultants or vendors and are actively seeking employment as a legal administrator;
  • Teachers of business, organizational management, law or law-related disciplines at institutions of higher learning, as well as deans with administrative and management responsibilities at such institutions;
  • Students in business, management, law or law-related studies at institutions of higher learning;
  • Bar association executives with management responsibilities; or
  • Other individuals not specifically excluded from membership who demonstrate an interest in the management of law firms and other legal organizations.

Ineligible Members: Membership in the Association is not open to vendors.
