Thomson Reuters, Vic Son, Senior Regional Field Manager

How and why did you come to work with law firms?  I was working for a law firm as their manager and, for a period before that, as their law librarian. I had aspirations early on for law school, but ventured into MBA studies instead. During those days, I noticed that many of the growth opportunities for careers, both financially and professionally, centered around the attorney ranks. When I was approached by a legal publishing company about becoming a sales professional, I took a shot. Selling to attorneys, coupled with teaching a legal research course at Bentley College Paralegal Program was an enjoyable fit. This was long ago, during the days when Kramer vs. Kramer was the top movie and many were trying to figure out “who shot JR…”!

Our products span three areas or types of solutions. Our products help law firms grow, practice and/or manage their business.

Share a success story your company has experienced working with a law firm.  We regularly hear quite a few of these stories from our law firms and users. Here is an example that just recently came across my desk: A partner from a Boston law firm needed help finding how different sections of a uniform law were enacted in each jurisdiction. One of our reference attorneys, Cheryl Johnson, smartly showed her how to access the references and annotations portion of the Uniform Laws Annotated database to quickly find her answer. The partner followed up with a short email note saying, “The reference attorney saved me many hours of research” and “solved my problems quickly.”

Share your "WOW" factor.
We, with our local account managers, are passionate about the service we provide our accounts.

·         Similar stories and quotes (see above) come from our users all the time. We get over 49,000+ calls into our reference attorneys each month!

·         Our database collection is more comprehensive than other providers. As just one example - we include over 8 million more court collected litigation documents than our closest competitor.

·         West cases, statutes and regulations are not the same as what you find in other places. Here are some examples of why so many attorneys rely on us.

o    This past year alone, our attorney editors added in over 150,000 new search terms to our cases and added over 419,000 head notes These added annotations help to make our information “more findable”

o    This past year alone, checking for accuracy and working with over 600 courts, we made corrections in over 100,000k cases and over 17,000 statutes.

I realize that these points may not mean much to a “non-user,” but these points are crucial in finding and delivering the best answers and ideas to help our law firm customers and their clients.

Accurate, Reliable, and Current.  Worldwide, we help the legal system perform better, every day.
