Dear Fellow Chapter Members and Business Partners,

As law firm leaders, we understand the importance of not just adapting to change but actually embracing it. In the past two years, our worlds have changed dramatically and irreversibly. The pace of change will only accelerate going forward and it is up to us to innovate and create a new future for the legal industry. Our relationships with our ALA members and business partners are now more important than ever.

As a long-term ALA member, I am honored and humbled to be the Chapter President in 2022-2023. I am grateful to those who have led so skillfully before me and who continue to support the Chapter’s leadership team. The dedication and passion of the many past presidents who generate ideas, participate in events and on committees, communicate with members and business partners, and are loyal to our organization is inspiring and impressive.

A special thanks to Megan Pluviose for her outstanding years of service on the ALA Board and for mentoring me so generously. Megan has been a thoughtful decision-maker and strong leader these last few years which have been so unique.

As a Chapter, we have a lot to look forward to in the coming year. We have recently begun to hold in-person events and will continue to do so. We are coming up with new ideas and have big plans for upcoming educational and Quarterly Event programming. And we will take time to socialize and connect on a personal level, because building relationships is really at the heart of our Chapter. It is these long-lasting relationships in which we can be resources to one another and offer support in trying times.

To our members: One of the things I have discovered during my years at ALA is that the experience became increasingly worthwhile the more I participated. I urge all members to see 2022-2023 as a time to step up, get involved, attend a roundtable, ask questions, join a committee, and get to know your ALA colleagues. As most of us are the only administrative leaders in our firms, having a network of peers to consult with, call for sanity checks, and cross-pollinate ideas, is incredibly valuable.

To our business partners: You deserve our gratitude for your steadfast support throughout the pandemic. It is because of you that we are able to provide our first-rate programming. We value our relationships with you and we enjoy seeing you at our events and conferences.
President's Message- Megan Pluviose 2020

Dear Fellow Chapter Members and Business Partners,

Serving as your 2020-2021 Boston Chapter President is an honor for which I owe much gratitude (and full credit) to the many Members and Business Partners who have worked so hard to pave the way before me, making the Boston Chapter one of the best (the best!) in the Association. I’d like to extend particular thanks to Amy Egan Cook who is moving off the Board for, essentially, the first time since 2010. She has dedicated an enormous amount of time, energy, passion and creativity to the Chapter, and has been instrumental in its success for more than 10 years. Special recognition is also due to Amy McDuff, who has been a tremendous leader for Chapter this past year. She seamlessly maneuvered an unexpected postponement of the Chapter’s 2019 One Day Leadership Conference & Business Partner Expo, but guided a year so full of educational and networking opportunities that none of us felt we had missed out. Then, last month, she navigated the difficult decision to again postpone the Leadership Conference at the last minute to protect the health and safety of our Members and Business Partners. Her calm under pressure is unmatched. Because of this, along with her many other strengths, I am beyond grateful that she will continue to be fully engaged in the leadership of the Chapter with me this year as Immediate Past President. She has been an extraordinary mentor and friend.

We all find ourselves in uncharted waters as we begin this new year. Our normal methods of working, socializing, and even everyday living have been completely upended. We are finding new ways to support our firms, our families, our communities and ourselves. One thing that will not change is that we have each other. We are all in this together, facing these same challenges, and the camaraderie and support within our membership remains. Perhaps, in this hard time, it will even flourish. I encourage you to remain engaged – with your professional development, with your colleagues, with the Chapter. No one quite understands your daily challenges and frustrations like your fellow Chapter Members and Business Partners. We can offer each other support, understanding, and information on best practices. We can serve one another as a sounding board, or a sanity check. Our Business Partners are experts in solving our problems, and eager to help us in any way they can. Many of them are already offering robust programming and advice – take advantage of what they have to offer. There are many ways we can support each other… the bottom line is that we can and will help one another through this, and come out stronger in the end.

On the professional development front, though our Chapter events have been postponed for the month of April, please know that the Board is working hard on developing new ways to bring these offerings to Members and Business Partners as quickly as possible. We look forward to announcing new opportunities in the coming weeks, and we very much look forward to seeing you all in person when the time is right to do so.

Stay healthy, safe, and sane.

Sincerely,

Megan Pluviose
Chapter President, 2020-2021

Update from the Diversity & Inclusion Committee

Update from the Diversity & Inclusion Committee

June 2018

As most of you know, the Diversity & Inclusion Committee has been working closely with YMCA Training, Inc. to develop a legal administrative support curriculum for their training program. You can learn more about the Training, Inc.’s current program here.

The committee has made some great strides in the development of the program and we are moving forward with a September target date. There is still a lot of work to do!

For those of you that routinely have internship programs in your firms: please consider offering an eight week internship to one of Training, Inc.'s trainees from the legal module. For those of you that don’t have internships, this would be a great opportunity to test the waters and employ a trainee for 8 weeks for a special project or other need.

As administrators, we all understand the need for skilled entry level support staff and the difficulties we face in recruiting, hiring and retaining employees in these positions. Once the program is underway and we have graduates ready for placement, we truly feel that both our firms and these program graduates will benefit greatly from the partnership and make a positive impact on legal offices here in Boston. As a reminder, when you hire someone from Training, Inc. there is no fee!

Please contact a Diversity & Inclusion Committee Member or Kim McMahon, VP Diversity & Inclusion, directly. We earnestly need your support to get this project off the ground.

Thank you!

Loss of a Friend and Colleague

Dear Chapter Members:

It is very difficult for me to announce the loss of a dedicated colleague, Jerome (Jerry) Bello. Jerry was the Legal Administrator of Mahoney, Hawkes and Goldings, Keegan & Werlin LLP, and Shilepsky Hartley Robb Casey Michon LLP. Jerry was a longstanding (28 year) and dedicated member of the Boston Chapter and ALA International. He worked tirelessly on the Community Outreach Committee, helping to raise as much money for our local community as possible - especially the Finex House, Boston's shelter for battered women and their children.

Kim M. McMahon, Office Administrator, Bove & Langa, P.C.

Thank you to the Boston Chapter for selecting me to attend the 2017 ALA Annual Conference in Denver. While my focus was on Diversity and Inclusion and what I could bring back to my committee and our Chapter, I also found a number of other topic quite interesting. Especially, Burying the Billable Hour by Ron Baker, Internal Controls & Segregation of Duties by Ron Seigneur and Executive Presence: How to Achieve Greater Influence in Your Firm by Elizabeth Fried. I met many wonderful ALA members from other chapters and it is always nice to know that someone, somewhere, has experienced the same thing that we may be experiencing now. Just ask!

Randy James, Office Administrator, Verrill Dana LLP

I recently attended the Annual ALA Conference in Denver, CO. I am fortunate and have been to a number of these conferences; this conference was one of the best. It was very well run and the educational sessions were informative and entertaining.

Not only did I gain new insight from the many interesting presenters, but I also learned about new products and services from the Business Partner sponsors. It was also great to meet fellow ALA Members from other chapters and to hang out with many of my Boston Chapter friends as well. If you have never been to an Annual ALA Conference, I highly recommend that you attend the next one at National Harbor (near DC) next year.

Ellen Snyder, Office Manager/Accountant, Kates & Barlow, PC

I cannot express how fortunate I feel to be a member of the Boston Chapter. Receiving the scholarship to the Annual Conference in Denver was truly a special gift. The educational sessions I attended were beyond anything from my previous experiences. The topics were very relevant to all the industry trends and there were so many options. Changes in payroll, diversity, and marijuana in the workplace are difficult issues to negotiate, but I now feel much more prepared to face them. This conference experience has given me the tools to be a better professional. Without the Boston Chapter’s support, I could never have afforded to attend. Thank you!

It's always exciting to meet new members, network and attend sessions and the 2017 Denver Conference was just as great as others I have attended. I found at least 3 or 4 new products to help our firm while going through the Exhibit Hall, and met new business partners. The Leading With Inclusion Idea Exchange was interesting, especially listening to people from different parts of the world. Sessions on digital communication, paperless law firms, presentations, design opportunities and the general sessions were captivating. Thank you Boston Chapter for this wonderful opportunity!

" I want to thank the host city and chapter for the warm welcome that I received in attending the Business of Law Conference- Central held in New Orleans. The speakers were excellent and the topics were on point. Two of my favorite presenters were Timothy Concoran, of Concoran Consulting Group, and Eric Dewey, MBA, of Group Dewey Consultant. It is my hope that our Program Committee will be able to arrange for either of these speakers to present at a future 2016 monthly luncheon. The ability to meet and network with fellow administrators from other regions was also a highlight of the conference. Thank you.

Ellen Snyder, Office Manager/Accountant, Kates & Barlow, PC

It’s always a privilege to attend a conference, particularly at a national level. Thank you to the Chapter for making it possible and to Derek McKinley for picking my name out of a hat. Working at a small firm doesn’t afford me these opportunities often. This conference did not disappoint. The sessions were not only informative, but many were interactive by design. It was great to be able to process the educational offerings with other small firm managers from across the country. The new Idea Exchange was the perfect platform for that. The exhibit hall was very helpful as well. There are many available products and services I never knew about. Most of all, the general session speakers were so inspirational and motivational they profoundly affected my approach to not only my job, but my life as well. Nashville rocks!

Chris O’Sullivan, CFO/Firm Administrator, Gesmer Updegrove LLP

Both my firm and I would like to thank the ALA Boston Board of Directors for honoring me with this scholarship to the Association of Legal Administrators national conference which was held in Nashville Tennessee this May. Though I have been to many conferences over the years, you always leave with new knowledge that you can bring back to your firm along with strengthening both existing and new relationships with both members and business partners along with receiving credits for renewal of my CLM certification. I thought the programs presented at the conference were very strong and key note speakers, especially Alison Levine and Tom Flick added a lot to the conference. It was also exciting to attend the Association's award dinner to receive the "Idea Award' for the Cash Cab program submitted by Region 1. I look forward to attending many more in the future, hopefully the next one in Los Angeles.

Cheryl Costello, Finance Assistant, Sugarman, Rogers, Barshak & Cohen P.C.

I would like to thank everyone involved in giving me the opportunity to attend the 2015 ALA National Conference in Nashville. It was a wonderful experience that gave me a chance to get better acquainted with the organization and all that it has to offer. The first reception I was invited to and attended was a Leadership/Newcomers’ ice breaker designed specifically for first time attendees. I was able to connect with other members immediately. During the week, I went to several sessions, which included presentations by three keynote speakers. I especially enjoyed Alison Levine. She was engaging, humorous and told several stories meant to motivate and inspire. I also enjoyed the educational sessions. The financial management sessions that I attended were very informative and the most beneficial to me. I was able to take away information that I can use in my current position. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this experience, from both an educational and entertainment aspect. I had a wonderful time! Again, I thank the Boston Chapter of the ALA for making it all possible.

Sally Penney, Law Office Administrator, Ross Silverman LLP

Thank you to the Boston Chapter ALA for the opportunity to attend the Nashville conference! I would not have been able to attend without the scholarship. I had a wonderful time and learned a lot. The most valuable session I attended was on Navigating Difficult Personalities - very helpful to learn about controlling your own reactions and guiding the conversation in a productive manner. Several other sessions also gave me ideas that can be implemented immediately in my firm. The Business Solutions Marketplace had some great business partners in attendance, and it was useful to be able to network with so many other administrators. It’s so nice to be able to get away and focus on educational sessions without (as much) constant distraction from the office!

Margaret T. Burke, Executive Director, Pabian & Russell, LLC

I’d like to thank the Boston Chapter for providing the support to attend the 2015 Annual Meeting in Nashville. Having not attended an annual meeting in over 5 years, I immediately knew this was a great opportunity to reconnect with my fellow ALA members as well as learn about the latest trends in our industry. I was not disappointed. In fact, the 2015 Annual Conference far exceeded my expectations. I found the session offerings diverse and full of tangible information. Since the conference, I have implemented a number of tools learned and even continued a working relationship with one of the presenters to help me improve my management skills. Most important, In addition to the valuable information learned, I reconnected with my fellow Boston Chapter members. Having the opportunity to spend a week with my peers and learn from them was invaluable. I found the experience personally as well as professionally rewarding. I’m already looking forward to the next conference.

Elaine Anastasia, Firm Administrator, Arrowood Peters LLP
First, I would like to thank the Boston Chapter ALA for awarding me a scholarship to attend the Chicago Business of Law Conference this year. I had an amazing experience! As this was my first conference, I was unsure what to expect. However, the ALA Conference Staff was extremely helpful and the conference was well organized. The speakers were amazing! I really enjoyed listening to Ben Newman and Rick Brinkman, and was motivated to buy their books afterwards. One of things at the conference that I found interesting was the BLC Café, which was a small roundtable discussion regarding the challenges and changes in law offices today. My table included people from Canada, California, and Mississippi and it was shocking to find that we are all experiencing the same struggles. It was also nice to meet people in different roles in their organizations, such as HR, finance, and generalists. It will be useful to have a few contacts that are not direct competitors in the same city as me. Most of the sessions were informative and relevant, with information that I could take back and use immediately in my firm, as well as in my personal life. Overall, it was a great conference, in a stunning hotel, in a great city. I hope to attend more.

Jo-Anne Connelly, Accounting Manager, Hemenway & Barnes
I am grateful to have been chosen for a Scholarship for the 2014 Business of Law Conference. Thank you to our Chapter and Business Partners for your generosity in providing this Scholarship. I am relatively new to the ALA and with this opportunity I was able to meet so many wonderful people within the organization and from different chapters. The conference was the perfect size for meeting other attendees and the sessions were informative and relevant. The speakers were engaging and I enjoyed listening to all of them. The conference brought together individuals from different areas within firms as well as varying firm sizes, all seem to have similar struggles and experiences.

This award is very meaningful not only financially by allowing me to attend but by also strengthening my professional outlook. The conference was great and I hope I am able to attend other conferences in the future.

The Programs Committee has one function and that is to provide meaningful educational opportunities to all the Boston Chapter members. This is sometimes not always an easy task. As most of you know we have monthly educational luncheons, monthly roundtable discussion groups and monthly webinars, all exceptional in content and well attended. True? Yes, if you work in the Boston area. Well, what about our members in the Worcester area?

One of our more popular educational events is our brown bag webinars. Ellen Snyder of Kate & Barlow has put together a great collection of webinars for the months of September through December. The webinars are produced by WestLaw, approved by ALA National for CLM credits and are shown on demand on the third Wednesday of the month here in Boston.

Today, the Boston Chapter is pleased to announce the implementation of monthly webinars to be hosted by Allison Hale at Lian Zarrow Eynon & Shea, 34 Mechanic Street, Worcester, MA, on the third Thursday of every month beginning September 18.

The webinars will be brown bag or (BYOL –bring your own lunch) and begin at 12:15. Most of the webinars run about one hour depending on the content. You will receive an invitation to the webinar about 2 weeks in advance along with a brief description of the content. Make sure you RSVP for security purposes.

I know that not all webinar topics appeal to all members, however getting together like this will give you a chance to network with fellow members and discuss other issues happening in your firms.

Membership Committee VP Jeff McGillicuddy and I are always open to suggestions. We want to hear your suggestions on how can we make our programs more accessible to you. Would you be willing to host an educational event at your firm, would you attend a Boston program in the morning or evening instead of during lunch? The Boston Chapter encourages all of its members to participate in as many programs and events, including conference scholarships, as possible. Jeff & I want to engage all our members not only in Worcester, but Metro West and other suburban areas to make sure that they are benefiting from all that ALA has to offer and enjoying the support and friendship of their fellow administrators.

Do you have a webinar topic you’d like to know more about? Contact Ellen Snyder and she will be happy to check for availability and add it to the list.

Please feel free to contact me, Jeff or any one of your Board members, we are here for you!

With best regards,
Kim McMahon
VP Program Committee
ALA Boston Chapter
